30 years LÖWENGANG

The LÖWENGANG Chardonnay and LÖWENGANG Cabernet wines are all about bringing tradition and innovation together. To mark their 30th anniversary, we are launching two very special wines on the market: the “30 years LÖWENGANG Chardonnay”, a unique cuvée of the 2013, 2014, and 2015 vintages, and the “30 years LÖWENGANG Cabernet”, the first of its kind to be made exclusively from vines containing 140-year-old DNA.

We draw on tradition as our inspiration for future development.

30 years
LÖWENGANG Chardonnay

This anniversary wine is characterized by the joy of experimentation, curiosity and, above all, experience. The first LÖWENGANG Chardonnay hit the market 30 years ago with the 1984 vintage. The "30 years LÖWENGANG Chardonnay” represents the bridge between experience and the desire for innovation.
Thanks to the gravel soil of dolomitic limestone, the wine-growing sites around Magrè provide perfect conditions for Chardonnay. The anniversary wine is a blend of the 2013, 2014 and 2015 vintages, meaning that some of the components have been kept on the yeast in the barrique for up to three years, whilst others reflect its freshness and increase its complexity.

LÖWENGANG Cabernet

Innovation also consists in recognizing quality, preserving the past and taking it into the future. This is symbolized in the anniversary wine "30 years LÖWENGANG Cabernet”, with its vines up to 140 years old and their ancient DNA.
To preserve this genetic treasure of old and unique DNA for the future, young vines were obtained through massal selection and the planted area extended. The anniversary wine is imbued with both the freshness of the young vines and the complexity and “wisdom” of the 140-year-old vines.
For the first time now, only the grapevines with this old DNA were selected and vinified. The anniversary wine “30 years LÖWENGANG Cabernet” stands out with this qualitative leap, which will continue to shape the LÖWENGANG Cabernet in the future.

Magrè

Grape growing in Magrè has shaped the history, culture and economy of the village community for centuries. It is characterized by a rich variety of contrasts in terms of its culture, geology and microclimate. Magrè is located in the Bassa Atesina, on the very southern border between the German- and Italian-speaking regions of Alto Adige and Trentino, 210-240 meters above sea level.
Magrè lies on a talus cone, formed millions of years ago by fossil deposits. The stoney, sandy, and deep soil has very high content of dolomitic limestone.
The climate is influenced by all manner of different factors. Looking southeastward, the morning sun warms the vineyard land early in the day. The Ora, a warm wind from Lake Garda, blows through the valley and provides warmth and good ventilation in the early afternoon. In the evening, chilly winds cool the area down, making for a pleasantly fresh temperature at night.

The Löwengang Estate

The first named owners of the Löwengang Estate were documented in 1369, the Gaun family. Back in 1674, Emperor Leopold I knighted the Gaun family, bestowing upon them the title of “von und zu Löwengang.”
After changing hands several times, the estate was purchased by, Alois III in 1934. In the vineyards around Magrè he was able to find new international grape varieties, such as Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Cabernet and Merlot, which were not so commonplace in Alto Adige at the time.
Alois IV decided to finally leave the city of Bolzano and began building a new winery around the historic Löwengang Estate in the 1990s.
