A gateway to organic and biodynamic viticulture
Misto Mare is a gateway for our vintner partners whose vineyards are still in the process of converting to organic and biodynamic farming and who have to wait for certification. The wine symbolizes healthy agriculture, strong partnership, diversity, and foresight.
Misto Mare moves between worlds—between mellowness and fruit, depth and lightness. Up front, it reveals a fruity character, which transitions on the finish to a moderate acidity that lingers, accompanied by its silky texture. Misto Mare travels in many directions, yet these do not create dissonance but rather come together as a harmonious whole. In its first vintage, Misto Mare brings together over 14 grape varieties from new partners, including both white and red varieties, sourced from various regions of Alto Adige, spanning different altitudes and soils.
Since 2024, the grapes for all our wines have been grown organically or biodynamically, including those from the vineyards of around 60 winegrower partners. This marks a major milestone and is the result of a 20-year process. Achieving this goal also means that from the 2024 vintage onwards, all wines will be organically or biodynamically certified - except for one: Misto Mare. To enable collaboration with new vintner partners who are transitioning to organic farming, we have created this new wine. It is an assemblage of grapes from vineyards that are not yet certified.
We hope that interest in organic and biodynamic viticulture will continue to grow in the future and that we can attract new vintners to work with us - new partners are more than welcome. Misto Mare will serve as a gateway for vintners who are converting to organic farming and need to wait three years for certification. The charm of Misto Mare also lies in its dynamic character: Misto Mare can be different every year, as the grape varieties may vary. Once the grapes are certified, they become part of the main range, while grapes from new vintners take their place.
As interest in a healthy lifestyle grows in our society, more and more farmers are approaching us with the desire to cultivate their vineyards organically or biodynamically and to collaborate with us. To achieve EU organic certification, vineyards must be farmed organically for at least three years. Also, grapes from organically or biodynamically farmed marginal rows, which border neighboring vineyards, are used for Misto Mare. Due to the potential drift of plant protection products, these grapes are not certified.
The label for Misto Mare was created by the renowned Finnish artist Klaus Haapaniemi, known for his imaginative and detailed illustrations with a deep connection to nature. Klaus Haapaniemi drew inspiration for the label directly from his visit to the winery. He unites three worlds - the underwater world with the whale, seahorses and corals, the earth with the imposing Dolomites and the cosmic world with the planets, comets and stars.
Misto Mare is a blend of various grape varieties from Alto Adige. 200 million years ago, the region was covered by a huge ocean, whose marine sediments contributed to the formation of the Dolomites. With a playful nod to this history, Misto Mare becomes, symbolically, a mix from the sea.
Our aim is to simplify the concept of biodynamics and share our personal approach to it.
The grapes for our wines come from our own vineyards and from those of our approximately 60 vintner partners throughout Alto Adige.
