Our most important wine, LÖWENGANG Chardonnay, stems from an experiment conducted in 1983 and this wine has influenced our winery, our family and our history. Our father laid the foundations for the winery’s quality orientation back in those days:
“When, in the 1980s, Robert Mondavi inspired me to age Chardonnay in barriques, he said: ‘Have you ever tried anything else? You have to make comparisons and question things. Tradition is important, but you also have to try out the new and improve’. The LÖWENGANG Chardonnay made us realize that another step upwards is always possible; and this awareness continues to exist today in our winery. We should humbly accept what has been achieved and try to become even better. LÖWENGANG INEDITO II stands for this endeavour.”
We want to stay open minded and curious, trying to improve our knowledge of the different LÖWENGANG parcels. We would like to understand the time factor and observe how it affects both the individual parcels and the grapes. LÖWENGANG INEDITO II is a wine that stands for the history of our winery while also symbolizing the future.
LÖWENGANG INEDITO is a journey through time of our LÖWENGANG Chardonnay. Every year we deliberately hold back a few casks from each Löwengang parcel. We give these wines more time and let them mature in the cellar on the lees, choosing the time that each individual wine spends in the cask. This permits us to bring them together into a completely new and independent perpetuelle each time. In 2017, we launched the first assemblage of LÖWENGANG Chardonnay, made from the 2013, 2014 and 2015 vintages.
For LÖWENGANG INEDITO II, we have selected the nine vintages from 2013 to 2021. The oldest – the 2013 vintage – thus had nine years in which to mature in the cask. Combining and recombining the characteristics of the various vintages is an enriching process. By blending vintages in this special way, we have created a wine that has never before appeared in this format; it is new, original and unique – or, in Italian, inedito.
When we tasted LÖWENGANG INEDITO II for the first time, we were extremely excited and even fell a little in love with this wine. It simply was an element of surprise. The wine is multi-layered, dynamic and incredibly complex; lively and fresh. Straightforward, while at the same time expressing the long maturation in barriques. It was a moment full of joie de vivre and quite emotional, like a song that begins in a low key, yet you can hardly wait for it to take off.
