For this year’s Rarum range, we have chosen our LÖWENGANG Cabernet and selected the 1996, 1998, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2010 vintages.
When our grandfather acquired the Löwengang Estate and its vineyards in 1934, the vines were already 60 years old. Today, parts of the vineyards are around 145 years old; they are among the oldest vineyards in Alto Adige. Count Melchiori, the owner at the time, planted the plots in Magrè with Carménère, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon around 1875.
.
The soil and climate have influenced the vines for decades and shaped their character. Magrè is located on a talus cone made of dolomite rock. The gravel deposits were formed over thousands of years by recurring floods of the Rio Favogna. The Ora, the warm wind from Lake Garda, warms Magrè during the day. In the evenings, cool winds from the Favogna Gorge ensure cool nights.
The constantly changing climatic conditions over the past decades have given every single vintage of the LÖWENGANG Cabernet a distinct character. Each vintage tells its own story. As vintners, our task is to respond to the changing environmental conditions to further develop the wine each year.
